About the Finance Calculator
This finance calculator works like a handheld financial calculator. Enter any four of the five time-value-of-money variables — number of periods, interest rate, present value, payment and future value — and it solves for the fifth.
How to use it
- Choose which value to solve for.
- Enter the other four values. Money paid out is negative; money received is positive.
- Choose whether payments happen at the end or beginning of each period.
Formula & method
PV(1 + i)^N + PMT(1 + i·type)((1 + i)^N − 1) ÷ i + FV = 0Frequently asked questions
Why do some values need to be negative?
The TVM equation uses cash-flow signs: money leaving your pocket (a deposit or loan payment) is negative, money coming in (a withdrawal or loan received) is positive. At least one value must have the opposite sign.
