Frequently asked questions

What return should I assume?

Long-run diversified portfolios have historically returned roughly 5–8% a year before inflation, but returns are not guaranteed. Test a range to see how sensitive your plan is.

What is the 4% rule?

A rule of thumb that withdrawing 4% of your starting balance each year (adjusted for inflation) has historically lasted around 30 years. This calculator uses a more direct year-by-year projection instead.
